Plane flight to Irvine in October for me and the girls: $1800.
Ticket to Reunion Event: $85.
Deciding not to go (see aformentioned plane ticket price), thereby relieving myself of an evening spent explaining the past 10 years of my life over and over and over and over: Priceless.

I promise, you are not missing anything. I could not get thru my 10 year without many many many drinks - and if you don't have that option, I don't think you could handle it.
I too did not go to my 10 year reunion. In the end I decided it was more stress than I needed. Things were too busy at the time and it just was not going to be worth it. I ended up buying a memory book for $20 and that satisfied my curiosity.
So are you just going to go to California, and NOT go to the reunion?
I have my reunion this summer. And the entire thing is at a bar. What the heck? I don't want to spend my entire weekend standing around people drinking. Those who I keep in contact with- I do. That's all I need.
But my BFF is begging me to go. So if she drags me there- then maybe I'll end up having to go.
I love it! I've never been to one of my high school reunions and I only live 20 minutes away. But then again, it is kind of fun to see who has gotten fat and/or bald along the way.
I can't believe we're OLD enough to have a high school reunion. gag.
No, I'm not going to CA in October. If I was in town anyway, I would probably go. Just to see who's fat and bald now, of course. ;)
I'm afraid this is going to expose me as all sorts of uncool, but I was in charge of the ten year reunion. Only because I was supercharged as a high schooler to have an excellent college resume and thought involvement in student government would make me seem responsible and attractive to colleges.
It also gave me a reason to don a blue tuxedo with a ruffled shirt and sit at a piano and "sing" show my speech. I put it on my resume, made important decisions like what color of shirt to order for the senior memory shirt.
Suddenly, ten years later when I'm so much less motivated by life, strangers, really, start harassing me with emails and questions about the whens and wheres. I had a three month old, lived two states away and my husband was just finishing his intern year of residency.
But, because I'm a pleaser and responsible, I organized the thing but did it my way and only charged $30 for a Friday night mixer at the high school (we had a soda fountain and I made a mix CD. All I remember is Nelly's "It's Getting Hot In Here" being replayed about every fifteen songs and I was there ALL night - I'm telling you, that's how a bunch of 28 year olds want to spend their evening) and a nice dinner at a hotel the next night with a dance and a cash bar. I think expensive reunions cost so much mostly due to the cost of alcohol, and I knew some of the kids in my class well enough to know we couldn't afford an open bar. (There's not a lot of alternative forms of entertainment when you grow up in Montana).
Truth be told, it was actually fun (if you had fun in high school, you'd have a good time, I think) but it would have been so much more awesome if I wouldn't have had to make color copies of everyone's high school year book photo, cut them out with an exacto knife and paste them onto a nametag. I went to great lengths for some major riff raff.
Most of the girls looked the same, I thought. But, man oh man, do the guys change in ten years.
Wow..this is a really long comment. I'm tempted to just keep typing to see when you'd stop reading and then I could quiz you later to see if you really read it all but since this is my first "real" comment on your blog, and not a solicitation for an invite, I'll stop now.
right there with ya! sara and i decided to skip out on all of the "excitement" of a ten year reunion. by the way will you post the recipe for your chowder! sounds good!
Yeah, I skipped that whole thing, I keep in touch with all my great highschool friends anyway, so need to go to a reunion.
I missed mine too! I have stayed in touch with those that I want to stay in touch with and I too didn't want to spend way to much money flying there, buying tickets, and probably just sitting by the same friends I see all the time anyway.
Just an FYI though - if you do go and someone has gotten fat and ugly - don't put their name on your blog. They may google it and then be really bitter! I am not speaking from personal experience but I do know someone who did do that and it was not good!
Never went to my 10 year. Was probably fat and ugly (aka pregnant). Went to my 20 year and ladies, I can't recommend it highly enough. Everyone I talked to who had gone to the 10 year, said that socially, little had changed but that they were SO glad that they'd come to our 20 year.
Kinder, gentler doesn't even come close. Not that it was a love fest - but very near that. So much more living had gone on and frankly just the opposite, which sometimes is the greater teacher. Spouses had been lost to death and divorce. Children had been born, some with disabilities, and more than one family had already buried a child. Classmates had succumbed to disease or had been killed in accidents and were remembered with dignity. Social barriers were almost completely down and with a common experience to bond us, the differences that separated us 20 years before, now helped us have interesting conversations and accept each other.
Plus I looked really good that night and feeling that way rocks any party!!!
I love your mom for writing that. And I've met her, and I imagine she looks really good EVERY day.
I, too, missed the 10 year. Not that anyone noticed. Anyway, I thought you graduated in '99 - the same year I graduated college. I guess I'm younger than I thought - or else you're older.
But you are sending this picture lifesize to the party right.....
