Let's Hide Those Hooters!

Boys who may be reading this: You will want to stop reading here…unless you are one of those types who go to the gym and nonchalantly pick up a Cosmo magazine, then retreat to the privacy of a restroom stall where you flip through the glossy pages, hoping to unlock the seedy underbelly of womanhood, only to discover how to successfully create a smoky eye and 25 ways to please your man, which I’m guessing you have more of an interest in than you are willing to admit if you do indeed read womens' magazines.

Still reading, big guy? Fine. You’ve been warned.

Maybe it’s the smidgen(?) of anti-conformist in me, but I always mentally vowed never to buy/make/use a nursing cover or “hooter hider” as they are sometimes called. I don’t like having the same thing as everyone else. I try to avoid it actually and always have. But as this baby nears and as the months and months of impending public nursing doom looms over my head, those dang nursing covers everyone has have turned from silly and trendy to extremely practical and I MUST HAVE ONE. Or three. I mean, you can be totally covered but actually SEE what’s going on down there, which some women don't need, but I do.

I am not one of those Super Nursers. You know the ones I’m talking about: the girls who can breastfeed triplets while they simultaneously change a tire on the side of a freeway. Me, on the other hand, I have to be comfortably sitting in a soy-candle lit room while soothing whale mating calls mixed with Gregorian monk chanting to Enya songs play softly on the stereo and when in mixed company, be covered by a king sized duvet cover, preferably stuffed with baby duck feathers. So, no. I'm not a Super Nurser. I would never dream of attempting to grocery shop and breastfeed at the same time. (Your welcome.) And there’s a good chance I’ve flashed you more than once Marti Gras style while wrestling my baby to my breast if I've nursed around you, despite the duvet cover. (I am SO sorry.) And I would not join the band of nursing mothers who have a group on Facebook, because #1 I’m not on Facebook (Why? Because everyone else is! Duh!) and #2 because I’d feel like an impostor. I do not love breastfeeding. I do not even like it. I merely tolerate it because it is healthy and economical. (Standing ovation from Miss Cheapy Pants.) I do not get dreamy-eyed and swoony at the thought of nursing babies like some women do. I have many an aunt and MIL who were Super Nursers and some have even, in hushed tones, revealed to me that they believe nursing is better than sex. Really? Hm. I disagree.

Anyway, as you can see, I gave in. I made myself a nursing cover. I hope it helps me like breastfeeding more. Maybe I’ll even end up liking it better than sex...

HA! I caught you, Go. You totally just read this post!

I love you because of this post!

And as much as I do enjoy nursing (the closeness, the ease and the $$freeness$$ of it) it will never be better than sex. I've never understood that connection some people have with it. For me it's like comparing apples and laundry baskets. I don't get it.

I can see how some people love it (I don't, but I can understand the whole bonding thing I guess).
Better than sex though?!? I would say something here, but it would be totally inappropriate. I'll think it in my head and you can try to guess what I am thinking....

Good job on the cover-it turned out cute!

Nursing shouldn't even be in the same sentence as sex!

I am not a hooter hider either. I have been known to publicly nurse but that was when I was in the freedom of not knowing anyone I was nursing around (ie at the national zoo with TONS of people passing by)

I have been tempted to make me a hooter cover for this baby as here in UT people are a little less free with their body and a little more judgemental!

Very cute! So cute I may consider nursing my next one...

We have something in common my cute cousin. A post I could have written myself, although you executed it much more eloquently. Very cute booby cover-upper.

Cute nursing cover but I prefer to call them "titty tents" or better yet "knocker blockers." To each their own, right?

hooter Hiders are the best...though ellery was so fidgety that I am sure I still flashed eveyone numerous times anyway. I prefer no cover...thus public nursing wasn't my first choice. Well, hope nuring lasts longer for you than it did for me...ellery hated nursing and was over it by 4.5 months. Formula is expensive.

I think I might have liked using one of these way back in the day when I nursed. Except, I'm not sure we could call it a 'hooter hider'. Maybe a 'mosquito bite hider' or 'M&M hider' or 'concave crater hider'. I mean, come on, I'm flatter than a pancake! I'm glad you can call yours a 'hooter hider'. Congrats on winning that genetic lottery!

JennyB. From your comment, you and I very obviously didn't have much face time back in Iowa...no lottery won here...

Daaaaaang, that is one sweet looking hooter-hider. Good luck competing with that Go.

Better than sex?! Puh-lease! That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard, and I LOVE nursing! Except when I get bitten by a toothed baby or thrush on my nipples or pump out straight blood. Doesn't that make you excited to nurse? You're welcome.

I gotta say, you are the silliest girl I know with your constant need to be a nonconformist in EVERYTHING. Some things you just have to do because they make the most sense and they are undeniably good things. I'd say a hooter hider is one of those things, especially if you plan to nurse with other people around. I hope it works out for you. It's very cute. Job well done!

Ok, so while very cute - I'm gonna have to say that it is WAAAAAY not big enough. Awesome grammar huh?
I bought one off ebay only to have it snatched AT CHURCH and never to be seen again. So I made myself one and it was twice as big as the one I'd bought. It worked SOOOO much better and I didn't even have to worry about a wiggly baby or a stray boob flying out.
When it comes to things that hide your hooters, I promise that bigger is better.
luvs, aby

PS - I am of the belief that boobs should NOT be private. Wouldn't life and nursing be a breeze if they weren't?

Yes, I understand the nursing cover. I have started nursing everywhere . . . in fact, this is a total needed blog post for me. With 3, you just can't head home every time the baby is hungry! The other two have lives and need to be everywhere so you nurse everywhere. Good for you! Cute cover!

From one non-super-nurser to another, I agree--it's worth it to use all the help you can get.

And I'm so happy to hear someone else won't give in to the facebook hype. Stand strong with me.

I have no comment regarding supernursing, nor your hooters. The cover is cute, though. And I wish you'd join facebook. I'm just sayin'...

Very nice, and well done! I in fact am a super nurser and figured out how to use my sling with the cover and feed Owen while walking at the outlets. See it can be WAY beneficial. Economical??? Not so much for me if I could still shop.

OK. I have to laugh. This post made me rememeber how you used to describe nursing Ruby... wrestling a mountain lion under your quilt!

Love or hate breastfeeding as much as you want but please don't let this be the beginning of a love affair with nursing because we all want there to be more Annie and Brandon Reynolds babies created.

I hated hated breastfeeding with my son and ended up pumping for 3 months because he wouldn't latch--so I am defintely NOT a super nurser--but my sister in law gave me one of those before I had him, so if this little girl ever comes--and if she will latch, maybe I will use one and let you know if I like them!! Good for you for nursing!

And better than sex!? What the )($*)(* kind of sex are they having!! Someone needs to talk to their husbands!!! Yowsa!
